About the Sport of Fencing

The sport of fencing has a long and rich tradition and is practiced in almost every country in the World.  Fencing has been featured at every modern Olympic Games starting in 1896.   Currently, three types of weapons are used in Olympic fencing—epee, foil and sabre.  The Woodlands Fencing Foundation focuses on the instruction and development of epee fencers.

The epee, the heaviest of all three fencing weapons, is a thrusting weapon and is used to score touches on the opponent.  Unlike sabre and foil, the target area covers the entire body and there are no requirements of “right of way” (rules regarding who earns the touch).  An epee has a blade, bell guard, point and a grip (french or pistol grip).  The Woodlands Fencing Foundation uses the electric or wired epee—with six strips (or pistes) and electric scoring boxes.

Over the years, fencing has become a very popular sport in the United States with fencing academies appearing all over the country.  Great success by the United States fencing team in recent Olympic games have only added to this interest.

The governing body for competitive fencing in the United States is the United States Fencing Association (USFA) and internationally is the Federation Internationale d’Escrime (FIE-International Fencing Federation).
